(Links unten)

I have the niwaki and it’s great. I also scrubbed & washed the canvas cover when I put it away last time and it came up immaculately.

The Niwaki one is excellent quality. Cleans up real good after it gets a bit mucky using their cleaning kit they sell too.
And the canvas holster is pretty tough wearing as well and not just cheap crap like some other tool makers would use.

I’ve been looking at the same this morning and trying to decide which one!

I loved my japeto, great tool. My allotment soil was mostly rocks and so it did wear down after 2 years of hard work. I feel like it would last a long time in kinder conditions.

  5. I have 2 Japeto, one with a serrated edge – I have to say, the serration does make a difference

Both of mine have been in just 5+ years with no issue, including a bunch of fairly rough jobs like digging out bramble balls in stony/clay soil

  6. Niwaki quality is very good. Customer service is great and their ethos and environmental attitude ticks my boxes.
    The price is decent too.
Just bear in mind that the knife (due to high carbon content) needs to be oiled after every use. They sell the oil too.

Does anyone know if having the hilt on the handle is helpful? I feel like I would be worried about stabbing too hard and mashing my hand down the blade. But that might just be me being a bit too cavalier and clumsy.

  8. Carbon steel vs. stainless steel is the main difference.

Will they care for the tool, maintain it, clean it after every use? Then the stronger, sharper Niwaki is best.

If they just want to chuck it about, not worry about rust, and won’t care for it then better get stainless.

I have the Japeto. Bought one for my mum (she borrowed mine and loved it) and for my MIL (her husband ended up taking a liking to it and has it 😅 fantastic tool. I got the cleaning kit too. It stays in great nick. Doesn’t need constant cleaning. Perfect for weeding, planting, sawing off branches… really pleased with it. Obviously I don’t have the Niwaki to compare. I went for the japeto as it was full tang (blade all the way up the handle). Can’t figure out if the niwaki is half tang as well as not being aerated.

£35 is a good price too.

Customer service always been good with japeto too.
