Put those four stones back for starters
If it gets full sun then you have an amazing space where you could grow a tonne of flowers during the summer. What sort of gardens do you like the look of? Check out Pinterest and follow your aesthetic. Pick some colours you like and let it flow from there.
If you can til the soil up a bit, you could create a border by the front of the house until you decide on whether you want to do something more substancial/planters etc
There’s a tonne of low-effort flowers I can think of. Verbena is great, naturalises and creates lots of height. Lavender loves sun and the bees love it. Maybe some interesting grasses to add some height too. Cosmos would be great here as well
Very vague guidelines here but could get you to start brainstorming
What do you like plants and style wise?
Are you looking for more privacy? Somewhere to keep busy by gardening? Or low maintenance and easy to care? Or a place to just sit outside and enjoy a cuppa and chinwag?
What is your climate, temp and hardiness
If you have certain plants in mind, check if right plant right place works for you and your area
And my favourite for inspiration of to have a walk around your neighborhood and see what other people are doing
Take inspiration from that to implement
Perennials like verbena could be really pretty, sow some wild flower seeds and things like cosmos which are annuals but grow easily. I like to plant really tall flowers along a fence so the verbena, fox gloves and hollyhocks would all be gorgeous. Very cottage garden though which perhaps isn’t everyone’s taste!
Also a really cheap time to buy bare root roses which will flower this year. You could train a climber or two along the fence.
Break it up a little so it isnt such a square empty space. Some shrubs at the fence next the pavement would help. Something a bit jaggy to help deter feral children / young adults.
General idea is taller plants farthest from the windows and aong the edges, smaller ones as you get closer to the windows.
Either dig it over, smooth it out and turf/grass seed, grow a lawn. Add some clover or other low plants to make it a bit varied. Once it’s established you’ll be mowing every week.
Or, dig it over, go mad down the garden centre, buy whatever plants you fancy (can afford), plant said plants, cover the rest of the ground with a thick layer of bark chippings, wait until it matures, pop out a couple of times a year to trim back plants getting out of control.
Or, dig it over, chuck a load of wild flower seeds down, wait for it to grow, trim it all back in autumn, repeat next year.
The good news is you’ve got a pretty blank slate there to start from.
Go for a walk and have a look at other people’s front gardens and get some ideas on what you might like. A hedge? Some nice shrubs? Massive collection of gaudily painted concrete gnomes? Mixed flower border? Sketch out how you want it to look.
From your list of wants, you can start small. Say you want a nice Acer somewhere as part of your plan, you can dig out a nice big planting hole, mix in some compost and go to the garden centre to choose something nice. You don’t have to do everything at once if you have a plan!
Small square hedging along the path (to knee height). Maybe bark a small area under the window. Plant some small flowering bushes.
Returf it. Edge it neatly.
Plant some roses and clematis again the neighbouring fence with a screwed in trellis.
You can do so many different things there. You need to have a look at other gardens and get an idea of a look you like then either plant it up accordingly, lay turf or a combination of the two. The choice of plants you have is immense but once you have an idea of the look you’re going for you can narrow it down. My front garden was covered with gravel when I moved into my house. I removed it and dug in lots of compost and manure as the soil was dead. I planted a hedge and then chose to put lots of hardy tropical plants in with small circular path
Sweep up the leaves, scratch up the soil slightly and put some grass seed down, it’ll grow in no time x
If it were mine, (I like roses). I’d put a climbing rose arch entrance (next to the path by your front door). Dig beds almost all round (except arch 😂) and plant bush roses all around. Seed or turf lawn, comfy bench, side table, book, glass of wine. ☺️☺️☺️
Wood mulch, raised planters, gravel paths.
Y not just have a good tidy up first??
Just because the front garden isn’t stand out there’s no need for it to look messy and unkept??
Simple tasks that really cost little to nothing will make a huge difference!
Tidy up,
Get all the leaves and crap off the moss area, remove the black bar things with a grinder,
A good power wash of the path,
Turn all the mud over and lay grass seed
Get some top soil over the top,
Nothing hugely expensive but would make a big difference
Move
If you’re into flowers I think some hydrangeas wouldn’t go amiss! Luckily you have a really lovely canvas to work with, so the world is your oyster here
I’d go with either ical lawn surrounded with evergreen shrubs like hebe box lavender or if like me you hate cutting grass have oval border in the middle fulled with shrubs and some easy perennials like phlox cranesbill and surround it with gravel
Straighten up your doormat for a start
