  1. The garden is not yours. No matter what you think you have to share it will the local wildlife, they get their say

Probably just a cat. They love anything that looks like a pristine cat litter tray so just plant loads of things and they won’t have anywhere that’s inviting to poo.

Looks like a fox to me.

You can’t completely stop animals digging, but you can plant up the area to discourage/hide it.

Probably a cat using the nice crumbly soil as a toilet. Had the same issue. I got some bamboo canes and lay them over it in a criss cross pattern to form a grid and it does the trick .

I have exactly the same in my flower beds after I pulled the annuals! I’ve even wondering what it is… we have foxes around and they’ve been in the garden, we’ve got neighbours cats… I’ve heard foxes like to bury things sometimes but never find anything buried. Or it’s a ct wanting to use it as a toilet but haven’t found the poop. And when I have found cat poop elsewhere in the garden no effort was made to cover it.

Before these footprint looking holes, we had something digging a reasonably sized hole in the beds so the dirt was in a pile beside the hole or out the planter. Did know if it was cat, fox, rat, squirrel… I’ve read that rodents know disturbed soil could mean bulbs so they look there and they smell the bulbs. Still happens if I flatten and firm the soil.

So far I haven’t planted in those planters but been planting bulbs in pots. I sprinkle some extra strong chilli powder in and put chicken wire in before the final couple inches of soil. Also wrapped bubble wrap round the terracotta ones and put them beside the house. So far they’re undisturbed…

If you find out what animal it is can you let me know please? Just curious and don’t have a camera. Also want to protect my bulbs from being eaten if I can as spent a small fortune!

  6. What’s the problem here? Your garden is an outside space which will be visited by wildlife.

If you truly want ‘all creatures’ eliminated, tarmac it all. Otherwise, just get on planting stuff.

Best strategy OP is a motion activated sprinkler that you have hooked up to a WiFi controlled timer. This way you can enable it when not at home (or when itd be funny), disable it during the day or when home.

Chilli Pepper and citronella work until it rains.
Those ultrasonic things are hit and miss then give up.
Skewers and prickle strips do work to move them elsewhere but are hit and miss alongside not being pretty.

Chicken wire over the top could work for the time being but isn’t pretty and is short term.

Water pistols only work when you’re keeping watch. (They do work if you catch them enough)

The PIR sprinklers are a bit more dear but making your own is a right faff. However, they will work as no digging animal enjoys being sprayed with water. it’s also less likely to be set off by birds so you get some good wildlife (also will help make your garden safer for birds by deterring foxes and cats)

It’s likely either a cat going to the bog, they’ll stop once there’s lots of growth as it won’t look like a giant litter-box anymore. Or it’s foxes looking for worms and bugs to eat. Again once it’s planted up and not so easy to dig out they’ll look elsewhere.

  9. Ask one of your friends with a dog for some dog poo and leave it for a couple of days around the garden. You’ll never have cats or foxes again.

  10. Once you’ve covered them all with cardboard they will be left alone.

Squirrel looking for freshly planted bulbs. Bastards.

As for repelling all nature 😂

I found a dead rat, covered in compost, in my garden this morning and a big hole in the soil of one of my pots. It’s not the first time. I found another one in my strawberry planter a year or so ago.

Who buried it and who dug it up. And why.

    (Rhetorical questions)

  13. Hopefully you’ll be able to fix it easily but also can you read me bedtime stories 😄

Cat or foxes, my local foxes also dig up my beds like this.

I now have 10x10cm galvanised wire mesh panels fitted to all my raised beds, it was the only thing thats stopped the cats and foxes toileting and digging up the beds.
